The renovation of a ground-floor apartment in Alfama, opened onto a forgotten patio.
Remove, rather than add. Every intervention returns light to the plan.
The apartment had been subdivided into seven rooms facing a narrow light-well. We removed four walls, lowered the patio floor to the level of the kitchen, and replaced a solid party wall with a pair of oak doors that fold back completely.
Surfaces are kept to three: lime plaster, oak and a pale terrazzo that continues from the kitchen to the patio without a threshold.

Late afternoon: the olive tree draws on the patio wall.
